Delegated design of glazing systems requires understanding architectural intent, building structural movement, manufactured system limitations, design loads, and methods. Architects, engineers, and contractors should be aware of essential key design requirements and know what to look for and approve delegated design submittals for curtainwall, storefront, and other glazing systems. “We will be taking an in-depth look at one of the most misunderstood and overlooked areas in glazing system design,” says Stewart.

10:30 AM - 11:30 AMEducational Program | Programa Educacional: Understanding Glass Railing Codes, Specs and Materials (AIA Credit: 1 HSW CEU) By Alberto AlarconMarketing Specialist for Kuraray Trosifol® interlayers

Incidents of falling glass from exterior balcony railings in highrise condominiums have resulted in new standards and building code requirements that address the post-breakage performance of glass. As a result, many railing specifications are calling for laminated glass to provide safety from falling glass. This presentation examines the safety concerns around the glass in railing systems and the new building code requirements that address the use of these systems. The results of impact testing will be presented. In addition, the need to specify the proper glass and verify the compatibility of sealants and grouts will be discussed.

With the recent impacts of Hurricane Ida and Superstorm Sandy, this course takes on critical importance. The course content translates the destructive power of a hurricane into specific failure modes and then outlines action taken over the last 15 years to eliminate the sources of failure.
